On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the trajectory of the whole world shifted. Or at least Gen Z’s world. In the midst of a whirlwind election that started between what some authors on Wattpad plotted as an enemies to lovers pipeline between Donny-boy and America’s sweetheart Joe Biden, would no longer be.
For some background, President Biden had two main reasons for stepping down from the race. The first was health related. As we all know the President had been battling a case of COVID-19 around this time, and it had taken a large toll on him. The second reason the President had for stepping down from his re-election campaign was because had been getting questions from members of his own political party about his age, his ability, and if he could fulfill a second term.
With Biden stepping down, he had to find someone to fill his spot. In the process of making this decision, Joe decided to make a call to a phone where his caller id comes up as blocked. Who has his caller id blocked on their personal phone, well it would be no one other than his BRAT of a vice president Kamala Harris. I am currently reading Kamala Harris’s autobiography 107 Days (which if you have not read it yet, I am not really sure what you are doing with your life) she does not hold back about anything.
Her book is titled 107 Days, because that is how many days she only had to run for the presidency. You may be thinking that it is still about 3 and a half months. Yes, it is, although the typical election campaign is around 18-24 months. Kamala had to think quickly, effectively, and demographically. The news spread like wildfire once Joe Biden announced he was stepping down and going to endorse Kamala instead.
Some might say that Kamala owes some of her immense campaign success to British Popstar Charli XCX who tweeted Kamala is BRAT not even 24 hours after the news broke. So much came out of this tweet that you would have thought it was a planned pr stunt. With this election having many first-time voters, like years past, this tweet boosted Kamala’s votes from Gen Z. She really took this iconic tweet and ran full speed with it.

From branding her TikTok page with the iconic BRAT green to the coconut tree meme, Kamala had Gen Z voters in a chokehold. On multiple occasions in press interviews, Kamala shouts her love for Gen Z and she states how they are “rightfully impatient for change.” Another thing that really helped Kamala’s campaign was that she didn’t just dismiss the trends, but she embraced them. Gen Z in a generation that let’s be real, is chronically online and she met them where they were at.
Kamala recruited two social media interns to create the iconic KamalaHQ TikTok page. These two interns got Kamala in loop with trends, were on top of replying to comments, and did not abuse their platform like some other politicians out there. Although it was not originally in her plans to run for president, and she tried her best with what she had, at the end of the day she did fall a little short. Kamala may have not won the vote of the people, but she won the hearts if Gen Z.
